Contrary to popular belief, Yangon is not the capital of Myanmar. It is in fact, Naypyitaw. However any misunderstanding can easily be forgiven as it only became the capital of Myanmar in 2006. Naypyitaw is located 320km north of Yangon and was purpose built to be the capital. It is the home to parliament and the National Museum. It has also hosted the 24th and 25th ASEAN Summits. Naypyitaw is known for being a large city with very few occupants, but it is also a transportation hub as it is adjacent to Shan State, as well as Kayah And Kayin States. The city is divided into zones, with the military zone (which houses Myanmar’s Government Ministries), the residential zone (where not only are roofs colour coded by the jobs of their residents but apartments are allowed according to rank and marital status), the shopping zone, and the hotel zone (where most of the hotels are located). There is 2 hectares of land allocated to each foreign embassies and the headquarters of UN Missions. Working in Naypyitaw is not as dynamic as Yangon, as the population is far fewer (and the city does not have a long history), and there are fewer job opportunities as most large businesses such as banking/ financial services/ investments are still located in Yangon.
There are job opportunities in Naypyidaw in a few sectors such as in the medical/ hospital industry. Naypyidaw has a three hundred bed hospital which also serves as a teaching hospital. There are also opportunities for architects and professionals in engineering and technical workers because of continuing development of Naypyitaw. As a result of this, skilled trades/ construction workers should not find difficulty in acquiring a job. However, opportunities in hospitality/ hotels are quite limited as Naypyidaw is yet to experience a tourist influx, meaning that currently the supply is higher than the demand. Much of the business the hotels receive is from international business representatives who need to conduct meetings in Naypyitaw.
