Mon State is located on the Andaman Sea, with the Bago Region to the north and Thaninthayi Division to the south. It boasts a beautifully tropical climate with not too much fluctuation in temperature. The capital of Mon State is Mawlamyine, which is the fourth largest city in Myanmar. Geographically, Mon State lies in a crucial position from a trading/ distribution/ import/ export perspective as it not only reaches Yangon easily by train, bus, sea and air, but it is also close to Thailand as well as the Thaninthayi Division. Adding to this, the region produces and exports dried fish, rubber tires and cashew nuts amongst other things.
Whilst the main tourist destinations are Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (the famous Golden Rock) and the Reclining Buddha there are also beautiful fishing villages in Ye and up the coast as well as Mawlamyine being a starting point for many people wanting to travel to Hpa-An. To the south of Mon State lies the Tahaninthayi division which is set to be the “next big tourist destination” in Myanmar, meaning that the tourist influx will have an effect on various places in Mon State. This tourist influx loans itself to not only jobs in hospitality and tourism but also to various projects as to meet the demand more supply is required.
Accompanying this tourist influx will be a need for not only English teachers, but as foreigners move to the state there will also be a higher demand for Burmese language teachers.
Myanmar is going through a time of unprecedented economic growth, and has opened itself up for foreign investment. Mon State is bound to be a recipient of much of this due to its’ geographical location. Many of the transport lines are going to be updated, and the infrastructure needs an overhaul. This calls not only for project managers and an abundance of engineering/ technical professionals but also skilled trade/ construction workers.
Hopefully some other aspects of foreign investment that will be given some required attention will be education and healthcare, which will open up more opportunities in education/ training and the medical/ doctor/ nursing function respectively as there is a lack of availability of these services in many parts of Myanmar.
