Job Description

Company Background 

Myanmar Strategic Holdings (“MSH”) is a leading developer and operator of a portfolio of consumer-focused assets that offer investors exposure to Myanmar and Vietnam 

MSH’s focus to date has been on opportunities relating to Myanmar’s Hospitality and Services sectors as well as Myanmar and Vietnam’s education sectors. The Group is headquartered in Yangon and employs over 2,400 people operating across five business divisions. 

 

Role Description 

The Financial Controller (“FC”) reports to the Group CFO and oversees the finance activities across our portfolio of businesses. The FC supports the businesses and works closely with management to increase business efficiency, improve profitability and plan adequately for the future.  

Duties and Responsibilities 

Financial Reporting 

  • Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures in conformity with the Group’s standards 

  • Implement and maintain strong financial controls throughout the business 

  • Guide and monitor all transaction cycles and controls, month-end and year-end closing processes for the business 

  • Prepare and review the business's consolidated financial statements under the applicable accounting standards 

  • Manage the audit process by working with auditors and advisors to oversee the preparation of accurate annual statutory accounts and tax returns 

  • Oversee proper usage of the ERP across the business 

Financial Planning & Analysis 

  • Oversee the portfolio business’s cash flow and maintain weekly forecasts 

  • Manage and review the budgeting process based on a zero-budget approach 

  • Assist with the KPI selection process and work with management to monitor financial performance through monthly financial analysis 

  • Oversee the development and monthly compilation of reporting packages as well as analytical tools that assist divisional managers 

  • Ensure divisional managers are supported by hiring, training and mentoring FP&A employees 

  • Participate in BU meetings to assess performance, support financial and operational decision making and provide necessary advice on cost reduction opportunities 

Treasury 

  • Execute policies to simplify and fortify liquidity planning.  Ensure sufficient cash is available as needed and that a buffer exists against surprise cash calls 

  • Manage the cash flow variance analysis and develop policies to improve the quality of future forecasts 

  • Optimize and manage the working capital cycle of the business to reduce the cash demands of operations and the investment needed to fund these accounts 

  • Design, implement and monitor appropriate controls to minimize risk and protect business assets 

Tax & Compliance 

  • Ensure compliance with financial and regulatory requirements 

  • Develop processes and procedures to eliminate tax leakage 

Procurement 

  • Oversee the procurement function to improve cost efficiency 

Leadership 

  • Continually monitor industry developments, develop contacts in the industry and identify opportunities and threats to the business 

  • Develop team members by managing performance, setting goals, providing ongoing training and maintaining strong employee relationship 

  • Lead by example for the rest of the organization and carefully cultivate a fast-paced and inclusive culture

Job Requirements

Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance, Masters advantageous

Accounting certifications (CPA, ACCA, CIMA) required

10+ years of progressive accounting expierence, with at least 5 years in a managerial position

Fluent English communication skills (written & verbal) and an ability to develop relationships cross functionally

Extremely organized with high attention to detail

Thorough understanding of accounting & financial reporting principles & practices

Strong leadership skills with a dedication to driving & achieving results

Advanced skills in MS Excel & Word

Extensive experience with ERP systems

In 2017, MSH signed a joint venture agreement with Auston Institute of Management, a leading private engineering institution in Singapore, to bring the brand to Myanmar. Auston College in Myanmar was soon launched, with foundation and diploma programs offered at a new state-of-the-art campus. Since then, the school has grown; in 2020, it partnered with UK’s Liverpool John Moores University to add internationally recognised degrees to its offerings.

In 2018, MSH identified an opportunity to open a top-tier international K-12 school in Yangon at a moderate price. After over a year of careful planning and fitting out of a world class new four-story campus, Yangon American International School welcomed its first students in August 2019. The school continues to grow and will be the first to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program when it is certified in 2021.

In 2018, MSH entered into the security risk management market by acquiring Exera, a leading security company in Myanmar, with over 1,200 professionals serving 50 companies. Exera provides risk management, consultancy, integrated security, security logistics, facilities management, and cash solution services.

As of 2020, the hospitality division operates nearly 500 beds across four locations under the boutique brand ‘Ostello Bello’. The group is continually sourcing for more locations to add to its portfolio.
